These hearty beef steaks, made with lean ground beef are dressed with sauteed onions rings. Whether served on toasted buns or on a dinner plate surrounded by other items these moist beefsteaks will satisfy.
1 (4 ounce) French bread dinner or sandwich roll
1/2 cup water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
5 medium yellow onions, peeled and sliced
1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
In a small bowl, soak French bread roll in water.
Meanwhile heat oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet. Cook 1 sliced onion until lightly browned; remove to a small bowl. Wipe skillet as clean as possible of excess oil. (Reserve 4 remaining onions for later).
Squeeze water as much as possible from French roll; combine onion with ground beef in a large mixing bowl; blend well. Season with salt and pepper.
Return skillet to burner; heat to medium-high.
Shape beef mixture into 4 equal patties; cook patties 8 to10 minutes, turning once or twice. Remove patties to a covered pan or dish; keep them warm.
Add remaining 4 sliced onions to skillet; cook until lightly browned. Top beefsteaks with onion rings.
Serve immediately on toasted buns or dinner plates with accompaniments of your choice.
