Inspired by the classic Reuben sandwich that contains corned beef, these sandwiches use enhanced ground beef as a savory filling.
1 pound lean ground beef
1 (4.25-ounce) can ham spread, chopped
1/4 cup minced onion
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon garlic salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
8 ounces sauerkraut
5 slices Swiss cheese
10 slices rye bread
Preheat broiler.
In a large mixing bowl gently combine beef, ham spread, onion, salt, garlic salt and pepper. Shape into 5 patties, each about 3/4-inches thick.
Broil patties on a baking sheet 4 inches from the heat, turning once, until done, about 10 minutes.
Divide sauerkraut and Swiss cheese over patties; broil until cheese is melted and light brown. Serve on sliced rye bread.
Makes 5 servings.
