4 lbs split peas
Soak 4 lbs split peas overnight, drain, and add :
7 quarts boiling water
1 lb bacon rind or ham bone
1 cup chopped onion
6 tablespoons salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon liquid smoke
2 lbs crumbled hamburger
13 cups evaporated milk
Cover and boil until peas and onions are tender. Put through coarse sieve, then add enough water to make 8 quarts. Brown 2 lbs crumbled hamburger in drippings or cooking fat until done. Add the hamburger, heat, and stir in 13 cups evaporated milk. Serve hot but do not boil.
