Bavarian Apple Torte

CRUST:
1/2 cup softened butter
1/3 cup sugar
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon vanilla

CREAM CHEESE FILLING:
1 8 ounces package cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

APPLE TOPPING:
4 cups peeled, cored, and sliced apples
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

For crust:
Cream butter and 1/3 cup sugar. In a small mixing bowl stir in 1/4 teaspoon vanilla. Add flour and mix well. Spread in bottom and 2 inches up sides of a greased 9 inch springform pan.

For cream cheese filling:
Combine cream cheese and 1/4 cup sugar; add egg and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, mixing well. Spread filling evenly over pastry.

For apple topping:
Place apples in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle 1/3 cup sugar and cinnamon on top and stir apples to coat. Spoon apples over filling. Sprinkle with nuts.

Bake at 425 deg for 10 minutes; reduce temperature to 400 deg and continue baking 25 minutes. Cool before removing from pan.
