24 caramels (about 8 ounces)
2 tablespoons prepared coffee
1/2 cup butter, melted and cooled (1 stick)
1 cup chopped nuts
1/2 cup more prepared coffee
1 package (2 layer) spice cake mix
1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 13″ x 9″ baking pan; set aside. In a medium saucepan, combine caramels and two tablespoons coffee. Place over low heat until caramels melt; set aside.
In a large bowl, combine melted butter, 1/2 cup coffee, cake mix and walnuts. Blend thoroughly. Spread half of batter evenly in prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for ten minutes. Sprinkle chocolate chips over surface of hot cake. Drizzle caramel mixture over all. Top with remaining cake batter. Bake 20 minutes longer. When completely cooled, cut into about 2 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ bars.
Makes 36 bars.
