Pickled Figs

3 quarts fresh figs
6 cups sugar
1 cup white vinegar
1 cup water
2 tablespoons cinnamon stick (4)
2 tablespoons whole cloves

Put figs in cooking bowl and pour over the 6 cups sugar, 1 cup white vinegar, 1 cup water and the cinnamon and cloves. Bring to a boil and boil for 10 minutes, uncovered. Cover and let stand overnight. Bring the figs to a boil for another 10 minutes, uncovered. Recover and let stand overnight. On the third day, uncover, bring to a boil for 10 minutes and put in jars.
