Empanadas de Fruta

1 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
8 tablespoons shortening
4-6 tablespoons water
Butter, optional

Sift flour, baking powder, and salt together. Cut in shortening and mix well. Add enough water to make dough easy to handle. Roll out dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut in rounds 3-4 inches in diameter. Fill each round with Fruit Filling. Press edges of dough together. Brush with butter and bake at 400 º until brown.

Fruit Filling:

2 cups canned fruit, drained
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cloves

Blend all thoroughly. Fill pastry rounds.
