Curried Sausage Pie

About 1 kg potatoes
2 onions
1 kg sausage meat
1 tablespoon curry powder
2 tablespoons brown sugar
400g can apple sauce, OR 2 cups cooked apple
1 tablespoon butter
fresh ground black pepper
1/2 cup milk
1/2 – 1 cup grated cheese

Cook and mash the potatoes with butter and milk. Slice the onions. Spread half the onion slices into a roasting dish. Working with wet hands, form the sausage meat into walnut size sausage shapes or balls and arrange these over the onions, in one layer. Cover with remaining onion. Mix the curry powder and brown sugar and sprinkle evenly over the sausages, then spread with the apple. Spread the mashed potato evenly over the sausages, roughen the top with a fork. Sprinkle with the cheese. Bake, uncovered, at 180 C for 1 hour.
