1 teaspoon yeast
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 cup hot water
2-1/4 cups self-rising flour
1/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup buttermilk
2 teaspoons vanilla
powdered sugar
Combine yeast, sugar, and water in small measuring cup. Stir until dissolved and set aside for 15 minutes. Combine flour and sugar in a large bowl. Add yeast water, milk, and vanilla, stirring until soft. Turn dough onto floured surface and knead until no longer sticky, adding flour as needed. Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness and cut into two inch squares. Fry in deep fryer in shortening or oil heated to 400 degrees. Flip after one minute; cook an additional 1-2 minutes or until caramel colored. Place on a paper towel-lined plate and blot. Dust generously with powdered sugar and serve immediately. Serves four to six.
