The Perfect Sunny Side Up Egg

1 large egg, room temperature
2 tablespoons butter
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper

In a small bowl, crack egg.

In a medium nonstick skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium, and add egg, salt, and pepper. Cook until the edge of the white is set, 2 to 3 minutes. There will still be a pool of unset white surrounding the yolk. Let egg cook about 1 minute more. Remove from heat and transfer to a plate; serve immediately.

Note
For over medium, cook 3 to 4 minutes, or until the white is mostly set. Carefully turn egg over and cook 2 to 3 minutes more. Remove from heat and transfer to a plate; serve immediately. For over hard, cook 2 to 3 minutes; break yolk with a fork and cook about 1 minute more. Carefully turn egg over, and cook 3 to 4 minutes. Remove from heat and transfer to a plate; serve immediately.
